Boost Your Credit Score for Better Loans

Your credit score plays a pivotal role in your ability to secure loans, especially for significant investments like real estate. Even government-backed lenders like FHA and VA have minimum credit score requirements.

  • Become an Authorized User

If someone you trust, like a family member, holds a credit account with a long history, low balances, and on-time payments, they can add you as an authorized user. They request a card in your name from the credit company. Your credit score gets a boost once this account reports to the credit bureaus (which may take a few days to a few weeks).

  • Consider New Credit

While acquiring new credit with a low score may seem challenging, secured credit cards provide an opportunity. These cards are like prepaid cell phones. You deposit funds with a credit union or bank, and in return, you receive a credit card. Using this card responsibly and maintaining a low balance can positively impact your FICO score.

  • Reduce Debt

High credit card balances can severely impact your credit score. By paying down your balances to less than 30% of your authorized maximum, you can see significant improvements in your score, often within a month. You can also request a credit limit increase to achieve this 30% balance-to-limit ratio.

  • Delay Paying Collection Accounts

Collection accounts are debts creditors have given up on but continue to report on your credit. Paying them off immediately may hurt your credit score further. Instead, focus on score improvement first. You can address these accounts once you've improved your score and secured the necessary credit.

  • Important Credit Insights

To establish a credit score, you need some credit history, often in the form of "trade lines" like car loans or department store credit cards. Mortgage lenders may require a specific number of trade lines for different types of loans.

"Alternative credit" includes monthly obligations not formalized by a note, such as utility bills and cell phone payments. Government lenders may require these obligations added to your credit report as additional "trade lines."

Late payments generally only affect your credit score over 30 days overdue. Therefore, paying your bills on time is crucial, as maintaining low balances and keeping your credit lines open for extended periods to secure the best loan terms and interest rates. Improving your credit score is an essential step toward achieving your financial goals.
